NEC Swimming Pool and Spa Practice Questions

These NEC swimming pool practice questions cover Article 680 — clearances, equipotential bonding, GFCI and underwater luminaires. Article 680 comes up far more often than the amount of pool work most of us actually do, and there is a good reason for that: it is life safety, and the numbers are specific enough to write clean exam questions around. Clearances, the equipotential bonding grid, and where GFCI protection is required are the three areas worth knowing cold.

Written by Kevin, a licensed Michigan master electrician — 26 years in the trade and 17 of them as an electrical inspector. Every answer below names the NEC section it comes from, so you learn where to look it up rather than memorising it.
Exam tipMost pool questions are a distance or a wire size. The 5 ft, 10 ft and 25 ft measurements and the 8 AWG solid copper bonding conductor cover a large share of them.

Tap an answer to see whether you got it right, the code section it comes from, and the reasoning worked out in full. Nothing to sign up for.
